Jacqui Marzocca Sunrise : Jonas Brothers Concert Review
Making a comeback is never an easy thing, but the Jonas Brothers are giving 2013 and all of their long-time fans their best effort. The concert was held on Aug. 9 at the Comerica Theater in downtown Phoenix. Though there weren’t as many fans as I expected, the small theater was filled up.
The opening performance included some fun, audience-involved sing-alongs with Mike Deleasa. This created an instant bond between the audience and the stage. Next to perform was Karmin, a band comprised of Amy Heidemann and her husband, Nick Noonan. They played their new song, “Acapella,” which evoked a strong, excited reaction from the audience. I was extremely impressed by this new music group.
The two together had incredible stage presence and were unusually
comfortable. Heidemann could not only dance and speed rap, but she had an incredible range when she sang a ballad. Karmin was a great start for the night. Finally, after what felt like hours of anticipation, the Jonas Brothers made their entrance.
Nick started on stage while Kevin and Joe braved the crowd from the back of the theater to the center of the stage. At one point Kevin was grabbed violently by an impressively strong teenage girl and security stepped in to rescue him. The band started off the night with one of its new songs, “First Time” and throughout the concert laced in pieces from its upcoming album.
The songs were wonderful, though I was disappointed at how many new songs they debuted and how many of the old favorites were overlooked. They did play “SOS,”
“Lovebug,” “That’s Just The Way We Roll,” and some other fan favorites, which almost made up for not performing some of the songs that really made people love the Jonas Brothers. One of the things that audiences often point out are the moments that the band shares with the audience.
Nick Jonas especially is a very talented performer and I have yet to see any performance of his that doesn’t have that moment. It usually occurs when he sings one of his songs and hits that high note that gives you goosebumps and the audience of screaming girls goes completely silent. Moments are what make performances memorable.
Therefore, I would call this concert a success and very enjoyable. I highly recommend any previous fans of the band take a trip down memory lane the next time the Jonas Brothers are in town.
