“Thank you for waiting three years for us,” Jonas Brothers said from the stage at Mandalay Bay Events Center about one-third into their concert Saturday night, then dedicated “That’s Just the Way We Roll” to their devoted and screaming fans.
Rewind about 30 minutes. After the theme to “The Lone Ranger” played, Kevin Jonas, 25, and the married one of JoBros, took the stage with guitar slung over his shoulder. Then Joe Jonas, 23, longtime heartthrob of the trio, entered via right-hand aisle to the stage dressed in all-white, including white jeans, and sporting a (distracting) porn ’stache.
Finally, Nick, 20, newly minted young-hunk JoBro who is dating 2012 Miss Universe Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island, ascended the stage from the left-hand side. For a band that was formed in 2005 and then went on hiatus for the passed three years, Jonas Brothers didn’t miss a beat.
Full disclosure: Before Saturday night, I would have been hard pressed to name one Jonas Brothers song — OK, maybe “S.O.S.” — but no matter. The pop songs upon first listen were catchy, comfortingly familiar and surprisingly really fun from show start to finish.
While there wasn’t much interaction with the crowd, and the brothers at no point flew over the audience (something one would see at concerts by Britney Spears, One Direction and Pink), the show was well produced and always interesting, and the large screen, plus, the three smaller screens onstage, complemented the Jonas Brothers and their onstage entourage with bright and captivating visuals.
The setlist from Saturday night’s two-hour concert — my setlist jibed with the lineup of other tour stops — included “First Time,” “Paranoid,” “Pom Poms,” “Found,” “Who I Am,” “That’s Just the Way We Roll,” “Give Love a Try,” “Gotta Find You,” “The World,” “Fly With Me,” “A Little Bit Longer / Black Keys” and “Let’s Go” (with opening act Karmin joining the siblings onstage).
Also, “What Do I Mean to You,” “Inseparable,” “Still in Love With You” (contest winner Ashley Stika of Las Vegas was onstage to sing along; Joe told her that she “has pretty eyes”), “Last Time Around,” “When You Look Me in the Eyes” and “Burnin’ Up.” The encore: “Lovebug” and “S.O.S.”
Other notes and highlights: The talented trio alternated vocals with musicianship on guitars, piano and drums. “A Little Bit Longer,” Nick’s song about diabetes, of which he suffers, performed at the piano was unexpectedly the evening’s most poignant moment. “What Do I Mean to You” is an angry rock song with searing guitars; absolutely loved it.
Also: All three brothers donned skinny jeans and T-shirts. The audience shrieked when Nick took off his black jacket to reveal a tight-fitting black T-shirt and big guns. The shrieks returned when Joe took off his white jacket to reveal a tight-fitting white muscle T and big guns. So, yeah, in case you didn’t already know, Nick and Joe have enviable arms and abs (Google them, if you must).
My guest, unbeknownst to me, has seen Jonas Brothers more than a half-dozen times because her daughter, now in her 20s, is a die-hard fan. Being an experienced JoBros concertgoer, she observed that they look and sound great, but it’s time for them to evolve as performers and interact more with fans, many of whom are still with them since they burst onto the scene eight years ago.
